Abstract

This study examined the oral reading miscue patterns of students’ Yoruba/English bilingual in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in Ibadan Metropolis.  One hundred students were randomly selected from five JSS within the metropolis. They consisted of both male and female students. Two instruments were used to collect data viz: Students’ Informal Reading Inventory (SIRI & 0.84) and Researcher’s Inventory for Students’ Reading proficiency (RISRP & 0.74). Two research questions were addressed in the study. Findings showed the following patterns of miscue in percentages: 48,16,10,11,8,4,1, and 2, for mispronunciation, substitution, omission, self-correction, insertion, repetition, reversion and hesitation respectively.  It further revealed that there were no variations in the gender and linguistic preference of students.  Therefore, recommendations were proffered for the improvement of the students’ fluency and proficiency in English language instructions in the State and Nigeria at large.
