Abstract
The study investigated the influence of post-traumatic stress on well-being of post graduate students in University of Ibadan. Increased academic rigor and health burden has made post-traumatic stress more prevalent among students in Nigerian Universities. The study employed a descriptive research design. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 215 postgraduate students who have experienced a form of trauma in their life time. A self-developed and validated questionnaire tagged post-traumatic stress and well-being of postgraduate students (PTSWPS) with reliability coefficient of 0.74served as the instrument. Data was collected with the help of five trained research assistants. Frequency Count, Percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used for data analysis. Hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results indicated that there was a significant relationship between post-traumatic stress and health of postgraduate students (r = .738, n= 215, p <.05). There was a significant relationship between post-traumatic stress and physical well-being of postgraduate students (r = .813, n= 215, p <.05). Posttraumatic stress had significant influence on mental well-being of post-graduate students (r = .775, n= 215, p <.05); and there was a significant relationship between post-traumatic stress and emotional well-being of postgraduate students (r = .843, n= 215, p <.05). The study concluded that post-traumatic stress had significant influence on all variables measured. The study recommended that Government policy should prioritise the mental health of Nigeria students. Post-traumatic screening should be included in the admission process of all Universities. Social workers and other health professionals should support the overall wellbeing of students.
